Candyleaf of Paraguay (Sugar leaf) - Stevia rebaudiana.
300 times sweeter than sugar! Delicious medicine!
Height 60-80 cm. Perennial subtropical plant, grown as an annual in the middle zone.
Stevia leaves contain a glycoside - stevioside, which is 300 times sweeter than sucrose. Unlike sugar, it has no side effects.
It is a low-calorie sugar substitute for patients with diabetes, impaired carbohydrate metabolism, and cardiovascular diseases.
The leaves are used fresh and dried, in the form of syrup and extract.
Growing conditions.
Sowing seedlings in light, rich, well-drained soil, superficially (without covering). Seeds germinate at an optimal temperature of +18+20 °C. Do not allow the soil to dry out or become waterlogged. Shoots are cut 16-18 weeks after germination. Before frost, you can transplant the plant into a pot and grow it indoors, or dig up only the rhizome and store it cool until the next season, covered with soil.
1 gram contains 2700 seeds.
Sowing: January-February. Transplantation: May (3) - June (1,2). Harvest: June (2,3) - August.
Beneficial features.
The leaves of this plant contain stevioside. This complex substance includes glucose, sucrose, steviol and other compounds. Today, stevioside is the sweetest product of plant origin, it is approximately 300 times sweeter than ordinary sugar.
But this is not where its special value lies. Due to its low-calorie content, stevioside does not increase blood sugar levels, so even patients with diabetes can consume it. In addition, stevia contains a large complex of vitamins, essential oils, minerals, and flavonoids.
The plant has antifungal and mild antibacterial effects and is also a natural preservative, which makes it indispensable in homemade preparations.
